Upholstery Cleaning – Some Simple But Useful Tips

Upholstery Cleaning – Some Simple But Useful Tips

Despite much care, upholstery needs to be cleaned at least twice a year. Dirt and spills can ruin the beauty of couches. So, you should clean it on your own or hire a cleaning company to have it done professionally. Given below are the things you should keep in mind when it comes to cleaning upholstery.

Reading the tags is very important. Most of upholstered furniture comes with useful tags describing the right way to carry out the cleaning. Tags have different terms that refer to different methods of cleaning. For example, S means you should apply dry cleaning technique, while the W means you can use a mixture or water and detergent for cleaning. WS means you can clean the upholstery using water-based solutions or dry cleaning. The sign X means you should only vacuum or brush the furniture and contact professional cleaners instead of removing the dust and stains on your own.

Maintenance is very important. Your upholstery should be cleaned on a regular basis. With constant use, couches get dust and dirty. You may dust the couches regularly using a brush and vacuum cleaner. You may also take the cushions outside and beat them with your hands to prevent the dust and dirt from seeping into the fabrics.

Remove spills immediately. You may use a paper towel or a clean piece of cloth to blot the spills up before they get into the couches. Stains become difficult to remove when they are soaked. So, act quickly when the stains occur.

Avoid rubbing or scrubbing the stains or spills. Instead, use a blotting paper. Rubbing the stains will only make them spread all over the couches. So, it is a good idea to use an absorbing material to absorb the spills as soon as possible.

Different types of stains require different types of cleaning technique. For example, it is better to use lukewarm water to remove greasy stains, while cool water should be used to cleanse non-greasy stains.

For cleaning, you may use store-bought solutions. Another option is to use common household items, such as dish-washing liquid, laundry detergent, vinegar, rubbing alcohol, shampoo and chlorine bleach. These items can be used; however, it is better to buy special upholstering cleaning solutions from the market.

Couches can be found in almost all homes. Lastly, prevention is better than cure, so you should not eat or drink on your sofas. Simple! Hope you will find these tips helpful.
