3 Important Tips For Installing Roofing Felt

As with anything, roofing felt can be installed in two ways: Right and wrong. Here are 3 tips to help you get your felt roofing right:

Use the right tools and materials. You cannot (or should not) glue roofing felt down with bathroom caulking! Use the proper, manufacturer recommended adhesives, whether they are cold applied or hot applied. Also, make sure the underlayment (also know as the decking) is suitable. Use at least 3/4 inch plywood or OSB sheet, and remember that if it can’t support your weight, then it probably isn’t good enough.

Use the right techniques. When you are in the process of bonding the felt to the underlayment, try to place your weight directly above a supporting truss or rafter. You can tell if you are in the right spot by finding the edges of plywood sheets or rows of screws or nails. If there are screws, there must be something strong underneath. If you do this, you won’t press the underlayment down, thereby creating a curved surface for the felt – which will stay curved when it is bonded down. Also don’t let rolls of felt lie down for more than a short period of time – their own weight will make them become oval, which will make them very difficult to roll out to a completely flat condition. And don’t forget to use more than one layer of felt – and always use two layers underneath asphalt shingles.

Be serious about safety. Don’t fall off the roof! Put up scaffolding if you can, or at least be very conscious about your movements up there. Don’t push yourself over your limits, no matter what you are doing – especially not while standing on a ladder or when you are close to the edge of the roof. Accidents tend to happen more often when you are tired or you are straining to do something. Don’t put yourself in situations where you could easily fall or Roofing Contractors In United States slip. If you are working with a propane torch, be extra careful! You do not necessarily have to turn it off every time you are not actually holding it, but in those cases, make sure you have a secure way of setting it aside so it doesn’t incinerate anything. Prop it up, so the flame points up in the air – or just turn it off if that is easier. Roofing is always potentially dangerous work, so never, ever hurry! Just do the work in a controlled pace.
