How to Clean Cream Curtains

How to Clean Cream Curtains

Cream curtains are a stylish addition to any room. They can bring a bit of class and elegance to transform a living area into something really special.

One of the few negative things about having cream colored curtains is the fact that they mark a bit easier than darker colored curtains. So any grubby hand prints or dust marks are going to show up on your lovely cream drapes.

Any curtain can be hard to wash without wrecking their shape; So I’ve put together a small cleaning guide to help make washing your cream or any light colored curtains a bit easier.

Before starting any home curtain cleaning, check the label on the back of your curtains first. If they are dry clean only you might be best taking them to a professional if you don’t want to risk ruining them.

Generally you will find that if your curtains are lined they will need to be dry cleaned as it can be quite a delicate process to clean both the lining and curtain fabric.

What you will need:

Napisan or another gentle colorfast fabric whitener

Mild washing detergent – liquid is best

Vinegar (if applicable)

What to do:

Fill your bathtub with water and the stated amount of Napisan according the the instructions on the bottle and soak your curtains for the stated amount of time. This will help bring the fresh light look back to any dulled cream fabric.

Once your curtains have soaked you can either hand wash them in some fresh water and detergent in the bath, or for lighter synthetic fabrics you can put them in your machine on a hand wash gentle cycle. Be sure not to agitate the curtains too much as this can cause tearing.

If you have heavy curtains it is best to hand wash them in your bath tub as you might damage your washing machine.

Once your curtains are washed, hang them out to drip dry. You don’t want to put them in the drier as this can shrink them.

Now to iron your curtains, check the label on the back to make sure you are able to use a hot iron, you don’t want to melt any fabric by using the wrong iron setting.

If you have metal curtain rings you can boil them up in a pot of vinegar and water to remove any rust spots and make them new and shiny again. Make sure you use an old pot!

Your cream curtains should now be nice and fresh and looking like new again!
